August T. Leimbach Antique Vintage Scissors & Letter Opener Progressive Printing Baltimore, Maryland

We pay the shipping costs on this item!  No charge to you for delivery!!

This is a very special, unique, and valuable find from a very old local estate collection that research found interesting in history.

This desk set appears to have been made personally for the famous sculptor and architect August T. Leimbach in the 1920's and has his name in brass on both sides of the letter opener.
(see research history below for details)

The scissors and opener are in a worn and quite used double sheath with a brass tip and covered in old deep reddish hardboard material.(much like very hard compressed cardboard).   The scissors appear to have been plated in gold or "like gold" with most of it worn away, but still showing. The sheath has two pockets, one for the scissors and one for the letter opener.

The letter opener has a brass plate attached to both sides with the following in all capital letters on each side:

PROGRESSIVE PRINTING CO.
AUGUST T. LEIMBACH
2413-15 E.NORTH AVENUE
BALTIMORE, MD.

Research Information:

As best we can find, the Progressive Printing Company moved into downtown Baltimore in 1919.  ("The Printing Press" periodical of Moore Publishing Company 1919, page 62)  The company handled huge and select accounts all over the United States.  Further research shows that for promotion, appreciation, and advertising purposes, large printing companies would custom make products and gifts for these large and/or important clients.

It appears one of these clients of importance was the famous sculptor August T. Leimbach.  Excellent references to his works, especially his "Madonna of the Trail" monument created for the Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated by President Truman in 1928 may be easily found in Google searches.

Although we cannot authenticate the piece to ownership, it appears by all research and indication that this was indeed personal property at one time of Sculptor August T. Leimbach made by The Progressive Printing Company of Baltimore, Maryland.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER NOTE:  We are not guaranteeing or officially authenticating this item to have belonged personally
to Sculptor August T. Leimbach.
